Who is Paul Lockaby?
I am a software engineer for a mid-sized federally funded research
and development corporation based outside of Washington, D.C., and
an alumnus of Virginia Tech.
I enjoy working with computers, and it's what I do for a living.
I also enjoy photography, and I have a whole bunch of photos
around the website. I enjoy hiking, and you might find a few
pictures of that, along with directions to some of my favorite hikes
around here, too. Anything beyond this is pure speculation, and I
can neither confirm, nor deny its veracity.
How do I contact you?
You can try the special form I built expressly for that purpose,
and is located here. Generally, I don't
give out other information about myself, such as phone numbers or
email addresses. This is for two reasons. First, I don't need any
more spam. Second, I don't like being randomly contacted by random
people. So please, use the form.
May I use one of your photos on my website, publication, etc.?
Every photo on my website is owned and copyrighted by myself, and
sometimes another organization for whom I was working. This means
that no photo you see may be copied, distributed, linked to, or
otherwise used without my express permission.
However, that does not mean you cannot use the photo. If you do wish to use a photo you find on this website, please contact me with the name of the photo, a link to the photo, who you are, and what you wish to do with the photo and I will tell you how you may use the photo. (I ask what you intend to do because the other copyright holders do have restrictions placed on me regarding how the photos may be used.)

What happened to Smarty-Light?
I was emailed in October 2005 by Monte Orht, the maintainer of
Smarty, asking that I change the name of my software so that they
may protect their trademark. I volunteered, under no pressure from
the maintainers of Smarty, and without debating the merits to their
request, to cease development and support of Smarty-Light. Shortly
thereafter, Smarty-Light was forked by Mark Dickenson. The fork,
titled Template Lite,
seems to be pretty slick.
As for this site, I no longer use Smarty or Template Lite. I recently rewrote the site to use mod_perl and Template Toolkit to generate the pages that you see here. However, if I were still using PHP as I did for years and years, and I were guaranteed to have correctly validating HTML, I would be using XSL and XML to generate HTML. I did that for several years and it was very fast and incredibly easy to do.
